Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance assist in evacuating Covid-19 positive patients from the Isle of Wight to University Hospital Southampton

On Sunday 17 January, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) assisted in the transfer of a ventilated Covid-19 positive patient from St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight, to University Hospital Southampton (UHS), to relieve pressure in the hospital’s heavily stretched Intensive Care Unit.

New Head of Operations to join Great Western Air Ambulance Charity

Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) has appointed a Head of Operations to enhance leadership at the charity in light of the growing and more complex demands on their lifesaving service.


In recognition of the significant contribution made by GoodSAM, Professor Mark Wilson and GoodSAM co-founder Ali Ghorbangholi both received an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2020. On average, GoodSAM now deploys 10 checked volunteers every minute to support the NHS in its Covid-19 response.

Research Shows A Significant Proportion of Patients with Sudden Loss of Consciousness Need Pre-Hospital Critical Care

Research from life-saving charity Air Ambulance Kent Surrey Sussex (KSS) in partnership with the University of Surrey has shown the benefits of dispatching HEMS to patients with a sudden, unexplained LOC of medical origin and a high prevalence of acute neurological pathology. The study – which is believed to be the first published about HEMS dispatch to non-trauma (neuro) cases - also highlights how HEMS dispatchers in dialogue with ambulance personnel are able to select patients requiring HEMS-specific interventions and, based on its findings, identifies opportunities to improve triage for these patients.

GWAAC Critical Care Doctor Recgonised in the New Year Honours List

Critical Care Doctor, Phil Cowburn, from Great Western Air Ambulance Charity (GWAAC) has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours list for his services to pre-hospital emergency care, most recently during the COVID-19 pandemic.
